It's really, really hard to unlearn or work alongside ingrained patterns. Perhaps the biggest obstacle is fear of ridicule, although these days- in The Days of Grid- 120bpm, 4/4, etc., is the global default and so the fear is not only of ridicule, but banishment from the whole endeavor, all of it. If we become musically monolingual, we lose highly developed pathways to shared insight.
